West Virginia Natural Resources Police said a man was charged and fined after he snagged a more than 6-pound trout off a bridge posted with signs prohibiting fishing.

Police recently received a complaint from a sportsman fishing on Shavers Fork in Randolph County who saw a fisherman snagging trout from a bridge, according to a news release Thursday from Natural Resources Police.

Both bridges crossing the Lower Shavers Fork section of the river prohibit fishing from the bridge.

The man was charged with unlawful method of fishing (snagging game fish), police said. He also will have to pay fines and court costs and a replacement cost of $140 for the fish.

Police said the rainbow trout he caught weighed 6.3 pounds and was 26 inches long.

“Anglers are reminded that is also a violation to fish from a bridge which has legally posted signs from the Division of Highways stating no fishing from the bridge,” police said in the Facebook post.
