As expected, ice fishing pressure on Lake of the Woods dropped dramatically during the winter of 2023-24, the result of unusually mild temperatures that hindered ice conditions and access, results from an annual winter creel survey show.

According to Matt Skoog, area fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Baudette, anglers logged “just over a million” hours of fishing pressure last winter on Lake of the Woods. That’s down from about 3 million hours of ice fishing effort during the winter of 2022-23 and the six-year average of 2.4 million angler-hours, Skoog said.
