Anglers fishing for sea-run salmon might end up throwing back more than they take as a new season bag limit of two fish is introduced in Canterbury.

The new limit is designed to help rebuild Canterbury's wild sea-run salmon population by increasing the number of fish reaching the alpine spawning streams, enabling more fish for future generations of anglers, North Canterbury Fish and Game chair Alan Strong said.

“The sea-run salmon fishery has been under stress for a number of years,” he said.

“This new regulation enables anglers to still have a chance to harvest fish, but by limiting their season bag limit to two.”

North Canterbury Fish & Game chief executive Rasmus Gabrielsson said the season bag limit is quite new for Kiwi anglers, but it signalled a bold move from only focusing on harvest to a new era of sports fishery management.

”[It] includes selective harvest practices, letting more anglers have the opportunity to catch salmon while rebuilding the fishery,” Gabrielsson said.
