Местные рыбаки ловили костистых рыб недалеко от побережья Чили и бросили в воду сети. Неожиданно в руки рыбаков попало нечто гораздо большее, чем обычная рыбешка. Это был исчезнувший вид "чилийской акулы-ангела".

В 1887 году чилийский ученый опубликовал описание маленькой скатообразной акулы, обитающей на мелководье в прибрежных водах Чили, но оно было неполным и неточным, говорится в статье, опубликованной в научном Европейском журнале таксономии ("European Journal of Taxonomy").
