My friend Gus and I have been debating the ethics of catch and release fishing. Gus thinks that it’s fine as long as you use barbless hooks, handle the fish gently and release it quickly. I say catch and release fishing is an abomination

For context, you should know that Gus (not his real name) is from Iowa, where hogs outnumber trout and where the unofficial state fish is a catfish.

You should also know that I am a lifelong catch-and-eat fisher with a degree in fisheries management. I’m not an activist for humane treatment of animals, but I do think we should treat all sentient life forms with respect and kindness.
