Chilligo Creek will be environmental playground

A new partnership is being forged along the banks of Chilligo Creek on the outskirts of Hespeler.

In 2000, the 165-year-old dam at Fisher Mills began to fail, which forced the city and Grand River Conservation to take immediate action. When the historic mill pond was drained, environmental regulations required that the cold water stream had to be restored. It sparked a lengthy debate to restore the pond, and later on how to redevelop the flood plain where the mill pond had been.

In 2006, work was completed on removing the old dam and the crumbling wooden bridge over the creek and installing a new bridge at a cost of $1.04 million. Now, the Grand River Conservation Foundation, working with Cambridge North Rotary Club, neighbourhood residents and with the financial assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is working to create an environmental playground at Fisher Mills for turtles, fish, and salamanders.
