Canadian solution to invasive species may be too drastic for Moosehead

Moosehead, Maine’s largest lake, is still a fabled cold water sport fishery. Landlocked salmon, lake trout and record-book eastern brook trout attract recreational anglers from around the globe.
 

For those of us who value the legacy and look to the future, the presence of an invasive species, smallmouth bass, in the lake is a disappointment and a source of concern.

A bomb cyclone brought dangerous weather conditions across the Pacific Northwest earlier this week, causing power outages for more than a half-million people and killing at least two. It also ushered in an atmospheric river, which brought heavy rainfall across the northern half of California. Multiple weather warnings remained in place Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), many of them flood related.

In a river of northern Brazil, an “armored” creature swam through the water in search of its next meal — or tried to at least. But something caught the striped animal and pulled it to the surface. Scientists looked at their catch and realized it was a new species.
