B.C. salmon fishing guides fear for livelihoods amid fishery closure

Andrew Turkstra’s phone has all but stopped ringing. For a salmon fishing guide entering peak season, it’s an ominous sign.

In April, Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced the recreational fishery for Fraser River chinook will be closed for much of the summer, apart from a small area off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Turkstra’s charter business, Reel Time Fishing Charters, is based in Nanaimo, where only catch-and-release fishing is allowed until July 14. In July and August, the fishing guide shifts his business to the west coast of Vancouver Island, running charters out of Ucluelet, before returning to the waters between the island and mainland for the fall.

“The closure takes three months of business away from us,” he said. “I can’t run a business only working two months of the year.”

In Pat Ahern’s neighbourhood in Nanoose Bay, boats are sitting on trailers rather than in the harbour. Popular fishing areas are quiet.

“We’ve had cancellations,” said Ahern, a fishing guide and president of the West Coast Fishing Guide Association. “But I think we’ll really see the impact of this next year. This decision will hurt B.C.’s reputation (as a destination for sport fishing).”
