Плотва имеет продолговатое тело, длиной до 40 см и вес до 1 кг. Рекордные экземпляры достигают 1.3 кг.

в разных водоемах может отличаться: в водоемах с глинистым дном и стоячей водной чешуя приобретает золотой цвет, в быстрых реках плотва имеет чистую серебристую чешую. Нижние плавники могут быть как желтоватого, так и ярко-оранжевого цвета.
