Группа ученых из Копенгагенского университета сообщила, что случайно обнаружила самый северный остров в мире у побережья Гренландии, сообщает BBC News.

В июле ученые вылетели для сбора образцов почвы на остров, который, как они думали, был островом Оодок (Oodaaq), открытый в 1978 году. Однако когда они сверили свое местоположение, они были на 800 метров дальше к северу.

"Через несколько очень волнующих минут мы приземлились на странную необработанную кучу грязи, моренных отложений и гравия, окруженную со всех сторон морским льдом - не очень дружелюбное место", - сообщил научный руководитель Мортен Раш Арктической станции Копенгагенского университета.

Остров 60х30 метров является самой близкой к Северному полюсу точкой. Ученые хотят, чтобы остров был назван "Кекертак Аваннарлек" (Qeqertaq Avannarleq), что в переводе с гренландского означает "самый северный остров".

Гренландия - обширная автономная арктическая территория, принадлежащая Дании. Ранее сообщалось, что в ледниках Гренландии третий раз за десятилетие температура поднялась выше нуля и выпали осадки в виде дождя.
