Longtime residents of this community in the heart of the Iron Range can recall a train trestle from decades ago that went over part of Silver Lake, and pedestrians could cross (illegally) as a shortcut between downtown Virginia and a few of the town’s residential neighborhoods.

In what city officials hope will be a matter of days, a new floating pier across Silver Lake will open to the public, with a reminiscent nod to the old railroad crossing, but with no danger of having to dodge a locomotive.
