Nofirma trials results in lower frequency of early sexual maturation in farmed cod

Following breeding trials, Nofirma – who run the national breeding programme for cod on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries – has revealed that breeding for growth has resulted in reduced spawnings in farmed cod.
 

Previously, farmed cod in the Norwegian breeding programme could spawn three times before reaching harvest weight. After being selected for growth, they spawn once.
