Карась амурский внешне похож на сазана, но не имеет усиков. Чешуя крупная, серебристо-серая. Правда, в зависимости от среды обитания чешуя амурского карася может иметь и золотистый, и черный цвет. Спинной плавник у него длинный, слегка выемчатый. В боковой линии 29–37 чешуек. Некоторые виды карася переносят засуху или заморозки, зарывшись в ил на глубину до 70 см.

Милый душе и сердцу большинства рыболовов карась легкодоступен, и даже в пригородной сети проточек и заливчиков озер можно насладиться отменным карасиным клевом.
