Charges dropped in NSW Indigenous cultural fishing

For Troy Potts, the sequence of events has become familiar. Go out diving for abalone, get pulled over and searched by NSW Fisheries compliance officers and, years later, have charges laid.
 

"I've done the rounds ringing lawyers, hoping they'll take the case on," Mr Potts said.

"Without money, there's not a lot of help. So I end up in court, pretty much just pleading guilty."

The Walbunja man, 42, was taught to dive by his uncles and older brothers, and faced his first charges over abalone possession in his late teens.
