В бассейне Амура водятся два вида сомов. Наиболее распространен сом амурский. Его вес достигает девяти килограммов, а средняя длина примерно один метр. Относится он к семейству сомовых. Тело голое, прогонистое. Рот очень большой и явно верхний. Рыба имеет по паре усиков на верхней и нижней челюстях.

В маленьком, без колючки спинном плавнике четыре-пять лучей. Грудные плавники колючие и зазубренные. Окраска тела светло-серая и серая, оливковая, желто-коричневатая, пятнистая или почти черная. Икра зеленого цвета, а семенники представляют собой гроздевые образования. Сомы такого рода правилами разрешены к вылову при длине не менее пятидесяти сантиметров. Дневная норма вылова — пять штук, двухсуточная — десять.
