Fall is also for fishing

Now with Labor Day behind us marking the unofficial beginning of autumn, we find ourselves in the initial days of our Pennsylvania hunting seasons. With the seasons on mourning doves and Canada geese now in play and with the Commonwealth’s archery season on whitetail deer just ahead (opening day here in Wildlife Management Units 5C and 5D is Sept. 21 with the statewide season starting on Oct. 5) the mindset of most outdoorsy types is squarely on the hunting seasons these days.

Speaking of outdoorsy mindsets, when it comes to the outdoors calendar, we think of early spring as trout fishing season with its April opener; late spring/early summer ushers in bass season when most bass tournaments take place in late June; by midsummer many anglers hang up their freshwater gear in exchange for saltwater tackle targeting flounder, croaker, bluefish, and tautog inshore and tuna, mahi-mahi, tilefish, and billfish out in the deep blue. But when fall rolls around, our thoughts turn to the hunting and furtaking seasons, often forgetting the fact that as the autumn weather cools, both freshwater and saltwater angling action heats up.
