Cub Scout catches 'monster' in Texas lake
A Cub Scout fishing in Figure Four Lake in Richmond hooked something Wednesday that was more monster than fish.

Nine-year-old Miles Sherman told media that this one had teeth.
His fishing buddy Carson Sholar said: "I was asking myself, 'What the heck is that thing and what's it doing in this lake?"

It turned out to be a pacu, the mostly vegetarian relative and fellow South American native of the carnivorous piranha.

A fish like this is not native to East Texas; it comes from someone's aquarium, most likely.

Houston Chronicle outdoors writer Shannon Tompkins writes that most of these kinds of fish come into Texas through the aquarium trade and end up in Texas waters when released by owners who tire of the fish or see them outgrow their tanks. That's how TPWD officials figure most invasive, exotic species end up in Texas waters.
