Thousands of dead fish have washed up at a popular tourist spot in South Australia.

The fish were flushed out of the River Murray and have been washing up at Middleton Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula since Thursday.

Shocked beachgoers were left pinching their noses due to the smell when the dead carp were washed ashore.

“They look quite hopeless, which is quite sad,” a surfer told 7NEWS.

“They’re kind of just bobbing towards the top surface and there’s lots of them you can feel them squirming in and around your legs.”

Swimmers said the visit was “really disappointing” due to the dead fish.

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” a swimmer told 7NEWS.
