How to protect fish and reptiles during Maines power outages

The December 2023 storm left many Mainers without power and therefore a heat source.

Those with fish or reptiles as pets were left scrambling to keep them alive.

“Tons of phone calls and the same question all the time- what do I do with the heat and what do I do with the air?”
 

Alex Yeng is the general manager of Pet Pro in Bangor. He also has a degree in marine biology. Yeng says while battery operated water pumps are always a plus, a lack of air filtration is not a major issue when there’s a power failure.

Heat, though is.

“The biggest challenge in Maine is that when the temperatures drops, it drops really fast so you really need to work on the heat.”
