Sturgeon guardians needed to protect prehistoric-looking fish

Volunteer guardians are needed in Cheboygan County now through early June to help protect lake sturgeon — one of the oldest species on Earth — as they head upstream along the Black River to spawn.
 

The Sturgeon Guarding Program’s volunteer river guardians help efforts by the Black Lake Chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and regional tribes to protect these fish from being illegally harvested during the species’ annual six-week spawning season.
