Мексиканским специалистам удалось вернуть в естественную среду обитания вымерший вид «рыбы-текилы»

«Рыба-текила» официально называется Zoogoneticus tequila, Tequila splitfin (или просто Tequila fish). Это вид рыб-гудеидов (семейство Goodeidae) из Мексики, названы в честь вулкана Текила. Рыба обитала в родниковых водах западно-центральной части Мексики, исчезла к концу XX века. Однако ученым и местным жителям удалось вернуть в естественную среду обитания вид, который вымер в природе, но сохранился в неволе.

Около 20 лет назад в Теучитлане, городке недалеко от вулкана Текила полдюжины студентов начали усилия по возвращению в естественную среду обитания «рыбы-текилы». Она исчезла из местных вод из-за загрязнения, деятельности человека и интродукции инвазивных видов. В 1998 году экологи из зоопарка Честера в Англии и других европейских организаций прибыли в Мексику, чтобы поучаствовать в создании лаборатории по сохранению рыбы. Они привезли из аквариумов коллекционеров несколько пар рыбок текилы.
