Thirteen anglers have been found guilty of fishing without a licence in cases brought by the Environment Agency. They must now pay a total penalty of £4,286 and have been named and shamed by officials.

An annual fishing licence currently costs from £33. Jack Iley, 28, of Laburnum Grove, Nuneaton was proved guilty in his absence of fishing without a licence at Ridings Fishery, Grendon on June 18, 2023. He must pay a total penalty of £345, including a fine of £150, costs of £135 and a victim surcharge of £60.

He was just one of those whose offending has been highlighted by the Environment Agency. Officials there target illegal angling in order to "protect fish stocks and make fishing sustainable", they say. Anglers from Birmingham, Walsall and Droitwich were all found guilty of fishing without a licence in recent cases taken to court.
