The very best days for catching a number of walleyes that I have ever experienced happened in mid-October. I like to pull around a bottom bouncer and plain snell baited with a nightcrawler, a.k.a. “the plain rig.” I wrote about the details of this rig recently in another blog because it works during late summer and well into fall. Several years ago, on a mid-Minnesota lake, two partners and I spent a glorious day catching and releasing several dozen walleyes, most in the 16- to 19-inch size range, with some “overs” mixed in. That was a special day, but it’s not uncommon to catch a dozen or more walleyes on a good day of plain rigging in October.
