Frisch: Keep the boat out

Every October, I observe lots of boats heading to storage for the winter. While winter is coming and boats will need to be stored in the not-too-distant future, holding off and keeping your boat available, and more importantly, putting it to use during this month just might mean you experience some of the best fishing of the entire year. October, you see, often sees lots of fish caught, and it can be a big fish month, too.

The very best days for catching a number of walleyes that I have ever experienced happened in mid-October. I like to pull around a bottom bouncer and plain snell baited with a nightcrawler, a.k.a. “the plain rig.” I wrote about the details of this rig recently in another blog because it works during late summer and well into fall. Several years ago, on a mid-Minnesota lake, two partners and I spent a glorious day catching and releasing several dozen walleyes, most in the 16- to 19-inch size range, with some “overs” mixed in. That was a special day, but it’s not uncommon to catch a dozen or more walleyes on a good day of plain rigging in October.
