ASC responds to lice limit increase critique

Compassion in World Farming International (CIWFI) reached out to ASC last week alleging that the revised sea lice indicators equates to a “fivefold increase” in the permissible number of lice per farmed fish; therefore arguing that the Code of Good Practice currently used as a mechanism for assessing ASC farms in Scotland is inappropriate.
 

However the ASC issued the following response to The Fish Site this week, which explains their decision in more detail:

“The previous ASC Salmon Standard (v1.3) had emphasised the metric limit set a decade ago as the core driver of impact at farm level. However, and in doing so, various equally important measures were either omitted or worked counter-effectively. This revised (v1.4) Standard has addressed this concern on Criterion 3.1.7, based on recommendations of the expert Technical Group (TG).
