Погода ранней осенью характеризуется усилением утренних туманов, постепенным понижением ночной температуры, холодными утренними росами. Заметно удлиняются ночи. Со снижением температуры и сокращением светового дня отмирают микроскопические водоросли, и вода постепенно становится прозрачной. Водные растения перестают наращивать молодые побеги.

С дальнейшим понижением температуры воды водные растения приобретают бурый цвет и начинают опускаться на дно. С началом отмирания растений, населяющие их рачки, черви, личинки и моллюски закапываются в грунт или перемещаются в более глубокие места.
