The Peace River Regional District is advising the public to steer clear of the Beatton River just north of Fort St. John due to a landslide.

The PRRD says the slide happened on the north side of the Beatton River Bridge on the Cecil Lake Road, blocking the river. A landslide expert is en route to assess the damage and extent of the slide, the district says.

The public is asked to stay off the river and away from banks south of where it connects to the Doig River. Motorists are also asked not to stop on the bridge.

Fran Haughian, a spokeswoman for the PRRD, said no cause has been determined as to what caused the landslide.

“We don’t know much more than what we sent out (Monday),” she said Tuesday morning.
Haughian said the district was waiting on investigators, who were still en route as of Tuesday morning.

She also said that a timeline of when the river would be cleared would have to wait until investigators arrived.

Haughian said it was too early to speculate whether or not Monday’s rains played a role in the landslide.

She wasn’t aware of anyone who was trapped or otherwise affected by the landslide.
