In June this year, when Kevin Flannery checked the temperature gauge on the piped seawater flowing from Dingle Bay into the tanks in his aquarium, he presumed there was something wrong with the dial.

It showed a record-breaking five degree jump, from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius. But it was no mistake, and the Atlantic waters stayed freakishly warm for a number of weeks.
