The 11-year-old fish that spawned a year-long fight with state environmental officials died Wednesday of natural causes.

Rocky, a 28-inch-long snakehead fish, made headlines this year after his owner Chris Deverso of Clay went head-to-head with state Department of Environmental Conservation officials who wanted to seize the fish, which was designated in 2004 as illegal to own in New York. Deverso bought Rocky at a local pet store more than 10 years ago.

Deverso won the fight in June, when state officials issued him a permit for his pet and told him to keep the tank locked. Snakeheads, an Asian species, are known for devouring all the fish in a lake or pond.

In the process, Rocky and Deverso gained supporters from around the world. At last count, Deverso said his "Save Rocky" petition included 1,300 signatures from more than 17 countries, including Australia, Germany and Singapore.
