Red handfish taken into captivity to protect them

With fewer than 100 red handfish left in the wild, researchers decided to take action to protect them against a severe marine heatwave in southern Tasmania.
They have successfully taken 25 into captivity, with plans to release them back into the wild before winter.
 

Researchers say the species still faces a range of threats, including from the increasing number of native sea urchin, caused by the loss of rock lobsters.
