The Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association is urging rainbow trout anglers to release any large females and males during the spring spawning run.

This message is aimed at anglers along the shores of Colpoy’s. New signs posted along the bay remind anglers that spawning rainbow trout represent our future fish. This volunteer based club stocks more than 100,000 rainbow trout annually to Colpoy’s Creek and Gleason Brook, trying to beef up the recreational fishery.

“Our last fish population survey completed at Colpoy’s streams showed that 63 per cent of spawning fish were fin clipped. So, our many years of stocking efforts are paying off,” said BPSA fish committee chair Ray Marklevitz. The adipose fin of stocked fish is clipped before they are released.

But over the years fewer rainbow trout have returned to Colpoy’s Bay streams to spawn. One reason for the decline is that they are vulnerable to increased angler pressure as they stage at two narrow creek mouths preparing to spawn.
