At the Haig Brown Festival, I noticed Rick and Pauline Humphrey casting out fly lines for a demonstration on the grass. Several people tried their hand at fly casting. For many, it was their first attempt at trying it out. The rods and line matched up, and getting the line out was not a struggle. Once you get the casting technique down, you have to decide on what fly patterns you need and for what application, salmon or lake fishing.

This year, I had a chance to fish with a couple from Germany on the Campbell River. They recently got married, and they were working across Canada, and they wanted to fish for pinks on the Campbell River. They got their license, and they had no fishing gear. I gave them my fly gear and took them to the river. It was a learning curve for them, and they had spent a few hours hooking into pink salmon. When they return to Germany, they will set up a photo wall at home, and pictures of their fly fishing experience will be well displayed.
