Turning fish alien to Mediterranean from problem to resource
The invasion of hundreds of fish, jellyfish, shrimp and other marine species, normally not found in the Mediterranean, has been turned into an economic and environmental opportunity. The cause of this unusual invasion is climate change and water temperatures rising due to the tropicalization process taking place. This includes from the scorpion fish to rabbit fish, from sparidae fish to blue crabs.

Blue crabs in particular are very common in Italy now, to the point that there are currently discussions taking place to create a new supply chain to also include processed food.

It is sufficient to remember that the United States developed new technology for the extraction of its meat. The new frontier has been put in place by fishermen of many countries from the Mediterranean basin (Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey), with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). Among its many responsibilities this Commission is responsible for monitoring and manage invasive species.
