A California man was sentenced to six months of house arrest for illegally smuggling six endangered fish through a Los Angeles airport, a federal judge ruled.

The house arrest sentence given to Garden Grove resident Ricky Vu by a federal judge was part of a two-year probation sentence that also included a $7,500 fine and 200 hours of community service, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

Vu, 35, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for smuggling six Asian Arowanas in his luggage as he traveled through Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 28.

The endangered fish were found by government officials after Vu arrived from Indonesia on a commercial flight.

U.S. prosecutors said the fish were still alive at the time of discovery and were being stored in bags filled with water.

The Register said Asian Arowanas, also known as dragon fish or lucky fish, can not be transported into the United States without a proper permit.
