С насеченными серпами Афанас огибал по тропинке озеро и все дивился, как ловко Васька, деревенский кузнец, зубильцем и молотком делал насечки на горбатом, сужающемся к концу, лезвии серпа. Другая баба секачом медленней стучит, когда траву сечет свиньям...

Так бы, может, и прошел мимо озера, да вывернулась, плеснула возле ситника щука; спасаясь от нее, и раз, и второй выскочила из воды плотвица.

Он остановился, подошел ближе, стал вглядываться в темную под солнцем воду...
