Maryland officials for years have tried to limit northern snakehead populations, and a soon-to-be signed bill to rename the fish might lure more people to harvest the fish, according to state documents.

A bill approved by legislators in March will change the common name of the Channa argus to "Chesapeake Channa" citing a desire for marketability to fishers and restaurant goers. This came after officials initially considered the name "Patuxet Fish."

The fish has been a hassle for the state's Department of Natural Resources, who said the fish's ability to spawn up to 100,000 eggs at a single time makes it difficult to mitigate.
