It’s no fish tale: Sausalito charter fishing captain to retire after 50 years

They say if you’re fortunate enough, you can turn your passion into a business. Capt. Jim Robertson knows he’s one of the lucky ones. For the past 50 years, the San Rafael resident has shared his lifelong love of fishing and boats through a career in charter fishing.

Growing up fishing in the bay, the San Francisco native was drawn to the waters off Sausalito, where he’s transported people on his boats — the Ginnie C, Ginnie C II and Outer Limits, a catamaran he had built and one of the first in the Bay Area and that his business is named after.

A friendly, familiar face on the water, Robertson will dock for the final time early next year and retire, passing the torch on to Christian Cavanaugh, who started fishing with him as a child and worked for him off-and-on for years.

Q What inspired you to start your business?

A During the last years of high school and junior college, I would work on boats weekends and summers to make a living, and I decided to quit and study to get my license. In 1976, I bought the Ginnie C from (the late Henry and Virginia Carlson). When I first got started, I was a young guy, and they noticed me and asked if I was interested in this business. I said I was. They reduced the price of the boat, took me under their wing, and became like my second parents and taught me the business.
