Live from Camp Heidelberg: Waterloo Region students take a virtual visit to a pond

“A lot of life lives right along the edge of ponds where a lot of plants are found,” explains the outdoor and environmental specialist with the Waterloo Region District School Board.

Woodhouse brings the net to the shore and the camera operator zooms in for a close-up. Students are tuning in to the live broadcast from computers in their classrooms and homes, no doubt anxiously waiting to see what Woodhouse has found.
“You can see a little bit of movement,” he says.

Woodhouse uses his hands to move around the plants in the net and pulls out a lesser water bug, then an orb snail, and a spider.
There’s something else moving in there. He reaches into the net and pulls out a diving beetle that performs back flips on his hands.
Woodhouse calls out his findings to his colleague Nathan Mantey who is keeping a tally of the creatures they find.
Then the camera turns to Sean McCammon, another outdoor and environmental specialist with the board. He’s also found some interesting creatures including a backswimmer — a find worthy of a trip to the “action desk” where McCammon drops the insect into a small container of water.
