VN Source: vietnam news 11/3/2010

Fishermen in the southern province of An Giang's Hau River, Mekong tributary, yesterday caught a 100-kg giant barb fish, the biggest yet seen in the region.

The fish is almost 1-metre-long and has a 1.2-metre-wide girth. Fishermen complained they could not carry the fish ashore.

The previous record-breaking giant barb fish weighed only 50-60kg in comparison.

Barb fish, one of the largest varieties of carp in the world, are found only in the Mae Klong, Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins.
