"He had paddled across the river from his cabin to set his fish net. He apparently toppled out of the canoe, or the canoe upset, and he disappeared into the river," said Staff Sgt. Tom Roy of the RCMP detachment in Fort Nelson, B.C. While the RCMP have called off their ground search for Betthale, Roy said officers will fly over the area throughout the summer. Meanwhile, members of Betthale's family have come to Fort Liard from across the Northwest Territories to camp out along the Petitot River and scan the water and shoreline for any sign of him.
