Fishing for black crappie a Holland River shell game

Tim Fernandes describes fishing for black crappies as akin to playing a shell game.

You know, the one where there are three shells and one hides a specific item and someone then shuffles them and you have to find the one that differs.

The same can be applied to fishing for black crappies.

Where these delectable delights are in the swim one day, they can be found in a different location just days or even a week or so later.

Such was the case when the Aurora resident and angling fanatic extended an invite for me to join him for a day on the Holland River.

Just two weeks ago, Fernandes informed me in enthusiastic tones he found the motherlode in catching a number of black crappies in the Holland River.

Not just in terms of numbers but ones he described as slabs measuring up to 15 or 16 inches in length.

To show me no fish tales were spoken, he displayed some pictures of what he hauled in and even a video showing them thick as bandits in a specific area.

Arriving at his honey hole in relatively quick fashion via his Nitro z9 bass boat and before sunrise so as to make sure we got there before any other anglers might have the same idea as us, we began what I hoped would be a day as good as what he had experienced.

What can make crappie fishing a memorable experience is that when these voracious fish are on the feed, you can put up some big catch numbers.
