Walleye at risk in Lake Erie dredge dumping debate

Lake Erie, the Walleye Capital of the World, is facing a new threat to its iconic species and the $1 billion a year sport fishing industry it has spawned.

The potential peril is at the heart of a dispute between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and the Army Corps' plans to dump sludge from what some consider one of the most contaminated miles of the Cuyahoga River directly into the lake.

The OEPA contends that dredging near the ArcelorMittal steel plant, and dumping the material into open water, could unearth cancer-causing PCBs that have lain dormant for decades on the river bottom, potentially poisoning walleye to an extent that strict, new consumption guidelines would be required.
