It’s been quite a rough year for San Jose’s public parks and its animals.

In January, a beloved statue of a 1600s-era Indian warrior riding a horse was found sawed off at the hooves at Guadalupe River Park and later discovered in a nearby metal shop with a history of run-ins with law enforcement.

Then, on Saturday, another caper happened three miles south at Kelley Park on Senter Road that has city officials and the public equally as perplexed.

A school of roughly 50 koi fish collectively worth $4,000 were scooped out of an isolation pod at the Japanese Friendship Garden. The garden — located in San Jose’s Little Saigon neighborhood — symbolizes the sister-city friendship with Okayama, Japan that started in 1965. According to the city, the types of koi that were taken are called Kawarimono, Hikari Muji, Bekko, Kohaku and Tancho.
