A SALMON poacher has become the first person in Scotland convicted on evidence from secret underwater cameras.

Thomas Mullen, 57, was caught on film sniggering salmon – illegally dragging weighted hooks along the river bed – in a pool crammed with the fish.

Water bailiffs had set up surveillance on the River Ericht in Perthshire just hours earlier, Perth Sheriff Court was told yesterday.

After checking the footage and discovering Mullen in action, they tracked down his son Daryl, 20, and found three dead salmon stuffed into his rucksack in the boot of a car.

Mullen snr, of Meigle , near Blairgowrie, and his son, who lives in Dundee, admitted fishing for salmon other than by rod and line on May 29 last year and taking salmon from the river without permission.

Sheriff Marion McDonald ordered unemployed Mullen snr to carry out £150 worth of unpaid work as part of a community payback order.

Mullen jnr was fined a total of £360.
