Local kids cast their lines Saturday as the annual Under The Lock Fishing Derby returned to the canal south of the Lift Lock.

The canal has been stocked with more than 3,000 trout, 350 of which have been tagged. Tagged fish earn prizes for anglers, with the top prize being Walter, a 10-pound rainbow trout. Catching Walter earns the Big Fish prize, which includes a spot at the OFAH Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp in Minden, or a fishing gear package from Shimano.

The donated prizes for other tagged fish include fishing rods, tackle boxes, camping equipment and mountain bikes.

Three speckled trout weighing up to five pounds that have been tagged for top prizes. Rosie and Berty are the second and third prizes (spots at the OFAH Day Camp). A fish called Kayak is the fourth prize fish and the prize is a kayak.

TackleShare representatives were at the event Saturday, offering games about fish identification, aquatic habitat and water safety.

"The OFAH is thrilled to continue the tradition of this showcase community event, which provides a great outdoors experience for children to participate in alongside their family and friends," stated Angelo Lombardo, executive director of the OFAH, in a press release. ""With so many indoor distractions, such as computers and video games, the OFAH is dedicated to getting kids outside to engage with their natural surroundings and to encourage the conservation of Ontario's fish and wildlife."

Fishing is open to registered adults ($15 per person) beginning Sunday at 9 a.m. through to Friday at 4 p.m. The daily limit is two fish per person.

Proceeds from the event go to local youth initiatives from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Mario Cortellucci Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre on Guthrie Drive.
