But the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department insisted that the sores are natural and common, and are caused by parasites called Epistyles that cause a disease called Epistylis.

The parasites live on aquatic plants and leave red-coloured lesions on the skin, scales and spine of fish, so the condition is referred to as 'Red Sore Disease'.
