CNY Outdoors Angler’s tale: ‘I caught a 14 1/2- inch goldfish in Onondaga Lake with my fly rod’

 There’s some gold in Onondaga Lake. Goldfish, that is.

North Syracuse angler Joe Selover confirmed that fact Saturday afternoon while fishing the mouth of Bloody Brook, a small stream that flows into the southeastern end of Onondaga Lake.

Selover landed a 14 ½ inch, goldfish while fishing from shore with his 4-weight fly rod, casting a wooly bugger streamer.

“I was there looking for bass and carp,” he said. “And then I saw two goldfish. I tried catching them a few times, but with no luck. But just as I was getting ready to leave, I finally hooked one.”
 

Selover said his heart was pounding as the fish took a run up the brook that flows underneath the Onondaga Lake Parkway and into the lake on the northern edge of the Butterfly Garden.

He said he had the fish on for about 10 minutes. When it tired, he solicited the help of a couple who were there at the time walking with their two children and were cheering him on as he battled the fish.
