A Gold Coast kayaker has had a close encounter with a shark while he was several kilometres from the safety of land.
Chris Carney was fishing for mackerel at Palm Beach reef this morning when he was taken by surprise.
The shark appeared, grabbed his catch of the day and took a huge bite.

Carney's shock was clear in a video taken from his kayak.
"That's a big shark!" he said.
He later told 9News the encounter was "scary".
"I was on my own out there, three kilometres offshore," Carney told 9News.
Despite the ordeal, Carney will be back out in the ocean again tomorrow.
