A “catastrophic failure” at UC Davis’ Center for Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture killed roughly 21,000 fish that had been kept for research purposes, the university said Thursday.

UC Davis said in a statement the fish deaths appeared “to be due to chlorine exposure, to which fish are especially sensitive.”

University spokesperson Andy Fell said a very small number of the fish survived, but most could not be saved. The incident — which occured overnight between the evening of Aug. 8 and the following morning — affected all of the fish together. The exact cause is still under investigation, Fell said.
