Plan to farm red drum fish off Sarasota coast brings controversy

A seven-year plan to cultivate red drum fish in the Gulf waters off the coast of Sarasota continues to draw controversy.

The Environmental Protection Agency invites the public to comment on the proposed project. The Hawaii-based company Ocean Era is seeking modifications to its permit to allow waste from the fish farm to be discharged into the Gulf.
 



While the company says this amount of waste is not consequential, long-term water quality concerns have some local environmental groups still opposed to the entire project.
